Art Spiegelman’s Pulitzer Prize-winning graphic novel Mouse is a milestone in Holocaust redemption and a breakthrough in serious comic art, but its overall achievements are more remarkable and eclectic. ART SPIEGELMAN: DISASTER IS MY MUSE traces his beginnings in the 1960s as a co-creator of Wacky Packages trading cards; he co-founded the underground comics magazines Arcade (with Bill Griffith) and Raw (with wife FranΓ§oise Mouli); “In the Shadow of the Towers” is his reaction to 9/11, inspired by watching the attacks from his home in lower Manhattan; his controversial covers for The New Yorker (1993β2003), which prompted the NYPD to picket the magazine’s offices; and his public response to the recent banning of “Mouse” by the Tennessee school board. Spiegelman proves to be an eloquent conduit through his provocative work, alongside contemporaries (Robert Crumb, Gary Panter) and younger cartoonists (Joe Sacco, Jerry Craft, Molly Crabapple) inspired by Spiegelman’s unflinching confrontation with personally traumatic subjects.
